The Casuqtte Girls is a thrilling tale of witchcraft, supernatural beings, and ventures into the past. I couldn’t put this amazing book down, and you won’t be able to either. So pour a cup of café au lait, and prepare for this spellbinding tale!
The Casquette Girls by Alys Arden
About the Book:
Seven girls tied by time.
Five powers that bind.
One curse to lock the horror away.
One attic to keep the monsters at bay.
After the storm of the century rips apart New Orleans, sixteen-year-old Adele Le Moyne wants nothing more than her now silent city to return to normal. But with home resembling a war zone, a parish-wide curfew, and mysterious new faces lurking in the abandoned French Quarter, normal needs a new definition.
As the city murder rate soars, Adele finds herself tangled in a web of magic that weaves back to her own ancestors. Caught in a hurricane of myths and monsters, who can she trust when everyone has a secret and keeping them can mean life or death? Unless . . . you’re immortal. (synopsis from Goodreads)
Trust me when I say that this book is unlike anything you have read before! I know some people are over the whole supernatural vampire thing, but you’ll be falling in love again with this book. New Orleans with all of it’s vibrant life, rich history, culture, myth, legends, and folklore, lends itself and incredible setting for this story. Unlike other vamp books, Alys’s story threads the fiction with the lifeblood of New Orleans, and though the two can’t quite be separated, this combination packs a poetic punch as the world that forms feels authentic and real rather than cliche.
The book begins in a vulnerable place that I connected to on an extremely personal level, but I believe any reader can find connection in the fear of losing one’s home, and that is what grabs your attention from the first page. The book didn’t need a literal “bang” to intrigue me, it had me at the raw emotion that radiated off this first page.
Alys does a wonderful job of representing the city of New Orleans in this book! More than that, she almost adds a layer of mystic and mystery to it that I think very few unveil when simply visiting. It was an intimate exposure to the beautiful and historic city, and much like the lore does there, the fiction of Alys’s story only adds to the intrigue.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I love when books make me laugh. And not the quite chuckle inside my head where I mentally fist bump a non-existent being, but a throw my head back, laugh out loud, delightful cackle, followed by a radiant smile or wolf like grin. This book was hilarious and I enjoyed every second that I exploded in laughter! I was all smiles gobbling up this book. The humor is a lighthearted touch to a somewhat dark story, but it also adds to the characters and their growing relationships as the story continues.
There is so much to say about this book, but it’s hard to not give it all away. I can definitely say this story was not at all what I was expecting, but I am thrilled with the story and the journey I ended up going on. If you haven’t read The Casquette Girls yet you need to get your hands on a copy! You’ll be bewitched from page one!
And make sure to have it read in time for Book 2, The Romeo Catchers, which comes out May 23, 2017!
Je t’aime tous, et au revoir! Laissez le bon temps rouler!
Alys Arden was raised by the street performers, tea leaf-readers, and glittering drag queens of the New Orleans French Quarter. She cut her teeth on the streets of New York and has worked all around the world since. She either talks too much or not at all. She obsessively documents things. Her hair ranges from eggplant to cotton-candy colored. One dreary day in London, she missed home and started writing The Casquette Girls.
Her debut novel garnered over one million reads online before it was acquired by Skyscape in a two book deal. Her second book, The Romeo Catchers, is due out spring 2017.
Alys is represented by ICM. And she still plans to run away with the circus one star swept night.
